When Kimono Meets Momentum

When I visited Japan, I was honored to be dressed in a traditional kimono—hairpiece, silk layers, dainty socks, fancy slippers, matching handbag—the whole royal treatment. My lovely wardrobe lady worked her magic, admired her masterpiece, and with a proud smile, promptly shooed me off to the next room for pictures.

What she forgot to mention? In a kimono, you’re supposed to walk like a delicate butterfly… tiny steps only.

But Queen Mary here? I took one glorious, full-powered, Western-sized step—and down I went!

Thankfully, a thick rug caught my fall (and probably muffled my squeal). No injuries, just a very colorful heap of silk and dignity on the floor. After the initial shock, I burst out laughing. I mean—what else do you do when you’ve just face-planted in full royal regalia?

So if you ever find yourself elegantly dressed in ancient Japanese fashion: step small, laugh big, and always check for rugs.
